What is Japanese Knotweed?
Japanese Knotweed was introduced to the UK in 1800's as an ornamental plant. The invasive nature of the plant was observed by early 1900's and its planting was no longer advised. Japanese Knotweed is now regarded as one of the most difficult invasive plants to deal with. The plant grows rapidly with new shoots appearing in the spring, by early summer they plant grows to around 3m in height.
All Japanese Knotweed plants in the UK are female, meaning the plant is only spread by physical means such as moving contaminated soil, fly tipping and riverbank erosion. Selling a property with Japanese knotweed in close proximity can prove very difficult. Many mortgage providers refuse to lend on properties with a Japanese Knotweed problem due to its potential for causing structural damage and difficulty to eradicate.
